One other advantage of optical viewfinders and high-quality electronic viewfinders is the ability to adjust the diopter. This allows the viewfinder to function as a corrective lens for your vision so you can see a sharp image in the viewfinder without wearing glasses.

Viewfinders on Compact Cameras

The optical viewfinder on a compact camera is basically a hole in the camera body that you can look through, which is completely different than an SLR viewfinder. Depending on how much thought and time go into the development of such a view-finder, it may also feature various indicators or be slightly shifted with optical elements. This gives you an approximate impression of the image area and what will be captured with the current focal length. More sophisticated viewfinders allow you to focus roughly, but these tools have a significant flaw: the viewfinder does not relay the image that enters the lens; rather, the perspective is from the side of the lens. This shift means the viewfinder displays a different scene than will be captured in the image. In technical terms, this shift is called parallax error. When you photograph subjects that are far away, this isn’t a major problem. But the closer your subject gets, the more visible parallax error becomes. To illustrate this problem, hold a finger up directly in front of the lens, then move it directly in front of the viewfinder. When it’s in front of the lens, your finger will appear in the center of the actual image, but you won’t be able to see it in the viewfinder at all. When your finger is in front of the viewfinder, the opposite is true.
